Should You Wear a Tux to Your Wedding?

Thinking About Your Wedding Photos Years From Now

I don't know if I'd call this a regret, but whenever I see my wedding photos, I wonder if I should have worn a more formal suit or even a tuxedo.

My wedding was a summer wedding and outdoors at a park. We didn't have a traditional venue and the whole event was more casual (as weddings tend to be in Utah, regrettably). I wore a blue suit. It looked good and it fit the setting, but when I look back at the photos now it feels a little more trendy than timeless.

Should You Wear a Tuxedo or a Suit for Your Wedding?

When you are planning a wedding, most people focus on what feels right at the moment. The venue, the colors your fiancée has picked out, the season, and the overall style of the event all influence the decision.

Try to picture yourself looking back at those photos 10 or 20 years from now.

Imagine the person you will be at that point. You will have more experience, more maturity, and a lot more life behind you.

When that future version of you looks at your wedding photos, what do you want to see?

Do you want the photos to reflect exactly what was popular at that moment in time?

Do you want them to capture your personality and the trends you were drawn to?

Or would you rather see something that feels classic and timeless no matter when the photo was taken?

For me personally, I would not have minded if I had dressed a little more formally. A tuxedo or even a very formal black suit would have felt a bit more timeless when I look at the photos now. That does not mean it is the right choice for everyone, but it is a question that is worth asking before you decide what to wear.

Your wedding is one of the few moments in life where you have the opportunity to dress at the highest level of formality. It is also a moment that will be documented and remembered through photographs for the rest of your life.

Take a few minutes to think about how those photos will feel in the future.

The Case for a Tuxedo, a Classic Suit, or Something Personal

If you want the most formal and timeless option, a tuxedo is hard to beat. A classic black tuxedo has been worn at weddings and formal events for generations. It carries an unmatched level of formality. If you choose a tuxedo, you will also own something you can wear again for black tie events in the future.

For people who want something slightly less formal but still very classic, a conservative suit is a strong option. Colors like charcoal, very dark navy, or black can still look elegant and timeless while giving you more flexibility to wear the suit again for work or other formal occasions.

Then there is the third option, which is to treat the wedding suit as a reflection of your personality and the style of the event. Some grooms choose colors like green, brown, or even red if it matches the theme of the wedding or expresses something unique about them. In that case the goal is not timelessness but individuality.

None of these choices are wrong. The important part is simply taking the time to think about it.

Many grooms treat their wedding suit like any other suit purchase and make a quick decision. Hopefully you'll only get married once. Spending a few extra minutes asking yourself how you want to look on your wedding day and how you want those photos to feel years from now can make the decision much clearer.

Your wedding photos will last for decades. The suit you choose becomes part of that memory.
